The Dissonant Smoker
  • In the majority of developed countries smokers are facing mounting social pressure and antipathy. An increasing number of restrictions prohibit smoking in public places and governments are funding major public health campaigns that make the dangers of smoking clear. Smoking is increasingly viewed as socially unacceptable and the smoker feels this fact more than ever. But as anyone who has ever tried will tell you, it's not easy to give up smoking.
  • Many of the new tobacco controls stem from the World Health Organisations' Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. More than 110 countries are implementing the convention's detailed measures. It calls for the banning of tobacco advertising, health warnings on tobacco packaging, moves to curb exposure to smoke in workplaces, on public transport and indoor public spaces, the promotion of smoking cessation and increased taxes on tobacco.
  • In developed countries, approximately 75% of all smokers can be defined as dissonant smokers. Unhappy with their smoking, they wish to change their smoking behaviour. Some want to cut down while others want to stop completely. Approximately eight to ten per cent of smokers are currently trying to stop smoking.
